Catching Snakes with Snake Traps

by Alan Stables

Snake traps help you keep your family safe from the fear of snakes in case your house is a host to these unwanted visitors. Snake trapping can become easy with effective traps but what is most important is to place these traps at the right locations.

In most cases, traps can be set up against walls as snakes move along edges or at other such places where snakes frequent.

There are various types of snake traps, such as:

Funnel traps:

Those traps allow a snake to enter through a single sliding door. The snake cannot exit though given the funnel-like shape of the trap. This trap also makes it easy to release the snake in the wilderness afterwards.

The snake traps should have baits like mice, frogs or minnows as these attract the snake to enter the trap. A funnel trap is usually 8 inches (20.32 cm) in height, 8 inches in width and 16 inches (40.64 cms) in length. The trap should be placed depending upon the type of snake you are trying to catch. This type of trap is suitable for snakes that are smaller than 3 feet (91.44 cm).

Glue boards:

Another common type of snake traps is the glue boards. It is simply a board that is covered with non-toxic glue. The snakes get glued to the board the minute they slide over it. This type of trap is efficient, but requires constant monitoring. Some snakes often attempt to get rid of their skin to get away.

Once you find a suitable location to dispose of the snake, both the snake and the glue board have to be doused in vegetable oil. However, extra oil will cause the snake to shed its skin scales which will cause its death. Glue board is a humane snake trap so be cautious that the snake is safe while being trapped or released.

While you might feel that you can use any of the above methods and trap a snake, it is not as easier. Snakes are of several varieties which mean there could be snakes that are poisonous too. Hence, getting help from professional snake exterminators is advisable.

These professionals have experience and all the required traps and equipment. They know where to position the traps in strategic spots, which generates better and faster results. In the event that you do want to do it yourself, snake traps can be an effective option, but require careful manipulation.
