Deciding when to take your pet to the veterinarian is an extremely important decision. Pets are an special part of many families and when they become ill, they may need immediate medical attention. Here are some ways to tell if you should contact the vet for immediate care.

When pets stop eating there is usually a reason why. Often times, an animal will turn away from food if it does not feel well. This can help the animal get better. If a pet suddenly is not interested in eating, it is important to watch them for other kinds of symptoms.

You should know what kind of bowel movements pets normally have. This way, you can tell if there are any variations, as it can be a sign of illness. Sometimes animals eat things that are not good for them and it makes them sick. This can bring on bouts of constipation or maybe diarrhea.

Many signs of illness will pass in a few days, and the animal will gradually get better. However, if there is no improvement after a couple of days, you should consider contacting the vet. Call the office and talk to someone that can offer medical advice. When you do this, you may be able to save the time and expense of traveling to the office and seeing the vet.

If your cat, dog, bird or other kind of animal lies around or sleeps all the time, it may be a sign of illness. Pets often get lethargic if they are exposed to some kind of toxins or poisons. Always make sure that your trash and garbage cannot be reached by any animals in the house. There are a lot of possible toxins in most household trash containers.

When pets vomit often, this usually means that something is wrong. If a dog or cat eats but vomits it up soon after, they may have some kind of blockage. This is a common occurrence with young animal like puppies, as they often eat and chew all kinds of things. If they cannot keep their food down, call the vet office.

If you notice that your animal is acting unusual, it may be a sign that they are ill. It is especially important to notice your older animal and watch for signs of illness. Older animals are subject to many disorders that people get, including heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. If they appear to be in distress, it is best to not take any chances and contact the vet as soon as possible.

Anytime that pets start acting unusual or different from normal, you should be concerned about their health. This is especially important if they are ill for more than twenty four hours. Young pets often eat things that they should not, and older pets may have sudden attacks of illness. Older pets may sometimes need immediate medical care if you suspect heart attack or stroke. If you are not sure when to take your pet to the veterinarian, do not take any chances with their health. Call the vet's office if you have the time. If not, go the office as soon as possible.
