The Best Big Dog Breeds

by Dirk Gruenberg

There are many different dog breeds, and, naturally, they differ immensely in size. There are no official weight cut offs that categorize dog breeds by size. But, in general terms, dogs that weigh 100 pounds and more are considered big.

Examples of those breeds are Great Danes as well as St. Bernards. Also very popular among dog lovers is the Irish Wolfhound. Moreover, the Matiffs are also very much appreciated by dog owners.

The latter is further broken down into different specific breeds including the English Mastiff, the Neapolitan Mastiff, and the Tibetan Mastiff breeds.

As you can imagine, the special thing about all these dogs is that they grow extremely fast and need a lot of care from the owner.

Personally, I love big dogs. But everyone who would like to get one needs to be aware of how much they need to eat. One to two kilos a day would not be surprising. Hence, this can lead to financial difficulties for some people.

Getting a big dog like that is only a good idea if you actually have the resources to feed him properly. And make no mistake, the feeding costs add up.

Moreover, you will want to consider the following aspect: Big dogs will be strong, too. This is no problem at all, as long as you train them well. Why? Well, what if you are a lady, and the strong dog starts pulling on the leash. He will probably just take you with him then.

Another point to consider is that big dogs are usually fairly protective. In my opinion, this is a positive characteristic. It is very convenient, too, since they will be likely to protect you, your family, and your property.

But not only that: They may also risk their own lives to safe yours. There are many stories of big dog breeds being life savers when natural disasters like storms and avalanches strike. In situations like that, big dog breeds can be truly priceless.
